The team at Biostar EQ and Tigger Montague brought their second educational webinar to horse centric individuals on the evening of May 30th. The topic covered was: Biotechnology in the Barn? Everything You Wanted to Know About Genetically Modified Organisms But Were Afraid To Ask.
The topic of GMO's (generically modified organisms) is up for major debate in both state and national legislature. Tigger thought it was important to help educate individuals on what this means for horses and the farms where they live. Discussion topics covered within the webinar included:
what is a genetically modified organism?
environmental and health concerns
biotechnology in our food
relevant scientific studies and what this all means in relation to our horses
While these topics may not seem relevant to some individuals, the scary fact is that GMO's affect every single life (both two and four legged) and the future of our food. Biostar's mission was to help put the information out there so that educated opinions could be formed.
The full recorded webinar including the Q&A session is here:
During the webinar there was many resources referenced and further information requested. Below, please find a list of sources for additional follow up:
Superweeds - article as done by the NY Times helping to explain by how some weeds evolved through an increased use of pesticides- similar to how some viruses have adapted through use of antibiotics.
Herbicide and Pesticide Use - as done by a peer reviewed journal, the Environmental Sciences Europe. The full article explains impacts of genetically engineered crops on pesticide use in the US.
Agent Orange - a tactical herbicide used by the US military during the Vietnam War. Facts relating to its use are provided by the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Additional online searches can warrant the updated versions being use as an herbicide on commercial farms in the US.
Glyphosate aka RoundUp - as reported by Wikipedia. This is another topic in which one can "google" to find out more information and find the implications of this broad spectrum herbicide used commercially and residentially.
Don Huber - is a scientist who has been studying the use of gyphosate for over twenty years. His articles, videos and audio interviews can all be found online.
Clinical Study on Glyphosate - relaying information regarding suppression of body's ability to destroy toxins due to glyphosate. Entropy 2013.
Clostridium - a.k.a. as "Blackleg" in bovines (cows), but also know as "Clostridium Infection" in horses has been known to create similar symptoms such as those found in the above study due to use of glyphosate.
Clinical Study on Glyphosate - done in Argentina relays information that glyphosate can be linked to increased birth defects.
Genetically Modified and Bioengineered Yeasts, Probiotics and Fungi are used extensively in our food system.
Results of bioengineering can include many of the following ingredients used both in processed food and/or supplementation - Vitamin C, Vitamin B12, Xantham, Citric Acids and Amino Acids. Along with Amino Acids, many natural and artificial flavorings additionally can be found from genetically modified sources and/or bioengineered practices.
Genetically modified enzymes found in starch can widely affect the following: Corn Starch, Maltodextrin, Glucose, Cheese, Bread, Wine, Alcohol - virtually anything processed!
Clinical Study on BT Corn - done in Norway revealed notable obesity and immune complications due to ingested BT corn in mice.
Clinical Study on BT Corn - done in Quebec revealed high levels of blood toxins in pregnant women, their fetuses and offspring due to ingestion of genetically engineered corn.
Clinical Study on BT Corn - done in Italy revealed increased in immune responses to allergies, asthma and other diseases through consumption of genetically engineered corn.
Clinical Study on BT Corn - done in Brazil revealed blood disorders also leading to to increased chances for leukemia due to ingestion of GM corn.
Clinical Study on BT Corn - done in France on rats over a two year period (rat's lifespan) and the effects seen in the populous fed gmo glyphosate tolerant corn.
Effects of GMO Potatoes was looked at in the late 1990's by Árpád Pusztai showcasing the effects seen on rats. His study was eventually published in 1999 by the Lancet.
Monsanto's history in bioengineering and some of the products they are most recognized for.
Non-GMO Project - This organization helps with the labeling efforts of consumer goods to help properly identify those products that have not been genetically tampered with. Biostar EQ is the only equine supplement company to be certified by this group.
Right-to-Know - is an organization keeping tabs on state and national news regarding GMO's.
GMO-Free - is another organization helping to educate and fight the battle against GMO's.
Organic Consumers Association - an organization campaigning for health, justice, sustainability, peace and democracy.
Union of Concerned Scientists - puts rigorous, independent science to work to solve our planet's most pressing problems.

Webinar Event:Tigger Montague Presents: Biotechnology in the Barn? Everything You Wanted to Know About GMO's
When: May 30, 2013 8:00pm to 9:00pm (EST) Where: Online Webinar (https://join.me/biostareq.com) Cost: Free
On April 30th, our team at Biostar EQ rallied together to support Tigger Montague as she walked horse owners through Stress in Horses via their first online webinar. The webinar covered The Cortisol Connection, Where Stress Starts, Recognizing the Signs, Managing Stress, and was followed up by a Question and Answer session.
The turnout of attendees was wonderful with a very active audience that helped to facilitate discussions and follow up on each of the topics presented. For those of you who may have joined the webinar late or may have missed it, we have uploaded the entire webinar to our YouTube channel.
Some of the topics which were covered in this webinar have additional follow up articles for horse owners to read at their leisure:
Coming to Terms - an article going over the finer points of labeling and what to be aware of in horse feed. Also gives a greater explanation to the term "genetically modified" or GMO.
Dried Distillers Grain - a component in many horse feeds and why you should be aware of what's contained in this feed filler.
True Balance EQ- multi-dimensional formula recommended for horses under stress and horses with metabolic imbalances including Holy Basil and a blend of mushrooms.
Equilibrium EQ - Biostar EQ's formula containing Ashwaganda which helps the body balance stress levels by maintaining normal levels of cortisol.
Tract Bios - is an active probiotic yeast for horses that provides 100 billion CFUs per teaspoon - a cup of yogurt supplies only 5 million CFUs!
Bio Flora EQ - combines prebiotics and probiotics to support colonization of beneficial bacteria in the gut while maintaining a healthy immune system.
Tum Ease EQ - helping to combat GI tract stresses, including whole food ingredients likecabbage.
Colostrum - helping to combat allergies and general stresses in horses.
Other Immune Supporting Foods to Consider - Reishi mushrooms, which can be found in Biostar's True Balance. Coconut meal and coconut oil which contains lauric acid that converts to monolaurin in the body. Monolaurin is also component of Colostrum, helping to support the immune system and brings the body to homeostasis.
Nibble Nets - extremely helpful especially during night checks when horses' cortisol levels go into "survival mode" and increase blood sugar levels and store more fat. The solution for horses is not less hay, but to feed hay more frequently in smaller amounts.
Beer for Horses - great for anhidrosis (non-sweaters) or for horses in warmer humid climates. Good revitalizer and recovery formula.
Almonds for Horses - one of the best treats for horses loaded with vitamin E, copper and zinc.
Rebound EQ - provides bioavailable whole food that supplies the body with what it needs to recover and bounce back more quickly from training, shipping, and competing stresses.
